Vultr, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Microsoft Azure, Amazon, OVH, OneProvider.

The Internet is almost completely blocked in Turkmenistan

The intensity of Internet blocking in Turkmenistan is increasing. Some sources inside the country claim that “the Internet has been blocked almost completely”.

In February, it was reported that Turkmen security services began blocking not individual IP addresses on which VPN software was installed, but entire subnets of providers providing virtual/dedicated server services. It is as if the authorities, having discovered that a certain telephone subscriber was engaged in undesirable activities, would disconnect the phones of everyone whose number begins with the same digits.

Now, according to sources, the situation has worsened. By now, the subnets of the world’s largest hosting providers: Vultr, DigitalOcean, Hetzner, Microsoft Azure, Amazon, OVH, OneProvider have been almost completely destroyed inside Turkmenistan.

In Turkmenistan, all major international social networks, all independent media outlets, and all sites where criticism of the Turkmen authorities may be found are blocked. But until the fall of 2021, it was relatively easy for citizens to bypass the blockades with a VPN. Then the security services began blocking sub-networks, effectively making it impossible to use VPNs. According to sources inside the country, “the Internet began to be turned into a local network between vilayats.”
